Rigs pull material out of the ground.
Intakes want it faster than you can route it.

two lines in, one new material out
An assembler takes two different materials and fuses them into a third. Feed it both — one full hopper and one empty one makes nothing.

Recipes live on the strip under the tools for the rest of the run — you do not have to switch to the assembler to read them. Tap a placed assembler with the tool to re-tune it. Intakes will start asking for made materials from here on.

Drag across the pad to lay belt. It points the way you dragged — drag back over it to turn it around. Belt is limited: the count on the tool is what you have left, and erasing returns every length.
Rigs extract one material each — you can tell which by the silhouette. Intakes accept only their own material, and the ring around one is its patience. Empty that ring and the run ends.
Splitter alternates between every belt leaving it — one line in, two or three lines out, evenly.
Sorter keeps its chosen shape going straight and shoves everything else out the side. This is how you unmix a shared line.
Bridge lets two lines cross without mixing — straight through, both ways at once. Drag a belt across an existing line and a bridge is laid for you automatically, if you have one spare.
Assembler fuses two materials into a third. Recipes stay on the strip under the tools — you do not have to select the assembler to read them. Both hoppers have to be fed, so a crafted good means two lines converging on one machine. Some recipes take a crafted good as an ingredient: that's two assemblers in series.
Later intakes carry a manifest of two or three materials. Every slot must be filled before the order ships — a part-filled one buys only a little patience. Surplus is held over for the next order, so over-feeding one line is safe.
Space stops time without covering the board. You can still pan, rotate, lay belt and place machines while it is stopped — use it to read a busy site before committing to a route. Esc opens the menu.
The wrong material clogs the line it's stuck on. Erase is free — use it. Upgrades queue on the top bar; claim them when you get a breather.
